FAQ'S
GENERAL QUESTIONS
Matcha is a finely ground powder made from specially grown and carefully processed green tea leaves. Unlike traditional green tea, where the leaves are steeped and removed matcha is whisked into water and consumed whole, giving it its signature richness and depth. Known for its vibrant green colour, smooth texture, and distinctive flavour profile, matcha can range from sweet and creamy to grassy and earthy. The process of shading the tea plants before harvest enhances their colour and character, resulting in a tea that has been celebrated in Japanese culture for centuries. Traditionally used in Japanese tea ceremonies, matcha is now enjoyed worldwide in drinks, lattes, desserts, and modern recipes. It’s a versatile ingredient that brings a unique, expressive flavour to almost anything it touches.
OSSU matcha is 100% certified organic and sourced exclusively from Uji, Japan - the historic birthplace of Japanese matcha. Nestled in Kyoto Prefecture, Uji is renowned for its centuries-old tea tradition and is widely regarded as one of the most respected matcha-growing regions in the world.
For over 800 years, Uji’s unique climate, mineral-rich soil, and misty valleys have supported the cultivation of exceptional ceremonial-grade matcha. Farmers in the region follow time-honoured techniques, including shading the tea plants with bamboo mats or tarps in the weeks before harvest - a traditional method that forms part of Uji’s distinct growing style.
At OSSU, we partner directly with small family farms in Uji, ensuring every tin reflects the region’s craftsmanship, heritage, and dedication to quality. When you choose OSSU matcha, you’re enjoying tea sourced from the heart of Japan’s rich tea culture.
Yes - matcha is a type of green tea, but it’s prepared a little differently. Instead of steeping whole leaves and removing them, matcha is made from shade-grown tea leaves that are stone-ground into a fine powder. You whisk this powder directly into water or milk, so you enjoy the whole leaf rather than an infusion.
This unique method gives matcha its naturally vibrant colour and smooth, distinctive flavour, making it a popular choice for those who enjoy a richer green tea experience.

Matcha is naturally concentrated, so a little goes a long way. For most people, 1–2 servings per day (around 1–2 teaspoons or 2–4g of matcha powder) is a common amount to enjoy as part of a daily routine.
Because matcha contains caffeine, it’s best to pay attention to how your body feels. If you’re more sensitive to caffeine, you may prefer starting with a smaller serving and adjusting from there. Matcha also naturally contains the amino acid L-theanine, which is traditionally associated with a smoother, steadier drinking experience.
As with any food or drink, listen to your body and choose the amount that feels right for you. If you’re pregnant, breastfeeding, or have any specific health concerns, please speak with your healthcare provider for personalised guidance.
HEALTH BENEFITS
Matcha has long been appreciated for its naturally occurring nutrients and antioxidants, which come from using the entire tea leaf in finely ground form. Because high-quality ceremonial matcha is shade-grown and carefully processed, it retains a rich concentration of naturally present compounds such as catechins and the amino acid L-theanine.
Many people enjoy matcha for its distinctive balance of calm and clarity, thanks to the way caffeine and L-theanine naturally occur together in the tea plant. This combination is often associated with a smoother, more steady sense of focus compared with other caffeinated drinks.
Matcha is also valued for its vibrant colour, smooth taste, and its role in traditional Japanese tea culture, where it has been used for centuries as part of mindful daily rituals. Whether prepared traditionally or enjoyed in modern drinks, matcha offers a flavourful way to introduce a time-honoured ingredient into your routine.
